I am having an interview with a colonel from the army.  He is very helpful by providing me all information I need, and we end up with a lively discussion about how to overcome the deep crisis his country is going through.  During the interview I get distracted. Not by the man himself, but by a little object on his desk.  It is a small pistol, so small that it could be a toy. But what would a colonel do with a gun-toy on his desk, in a place where he is receiving people all the time?  Maybe it is a key chain, but I cannot not detect any keys or a ring for hanging keys on it.  So I conclude it is real, asking myself why he would have a real mini-gun on his desk?  It is probably too small to intimidate most people, but for me, coming from a country where people don’t have the habit to show around their gun, let alone the fact they would have one, I am a bit overwhelmed.

While I am executing the interview, sometimes the colonel touches the mini-gun, and images of him coincidentally firing it into my direction slip into my mind.   I know, I have too much fantasy, but I am sitting right in front of it.

I am wondering if it would be very incautious to ask him about it, but I decide not to do it. If it turns out to be real, then I would REALLY be distracted. And if it is just a gadget, then perhaps I would embarrass him with the question (how to think such a thing of having a real gun here)?

By the end of the interview, I have convinced myself it is not a real pistol.  But even if it is just a small, tiny gun-gadget , putting it in front of someone else, is not really okay, I think.

Hoy tengo una entrevista con un coronel del ejército. Me proporciona toda la información que necesito, y terminamos con una animada discusión sobre cómo superar la profunda crisis que atraviesa su país. Durante la entrevista me distraigo. No por el hombre mismo, sino por un pequeño objeto en su escritorio. Es una pequeña pistola, tan pequeña que podría ser un juguete.  Pero, ¿qué haría un coronel con un arma de fuego en su escritorio, en un lugar donde recibe gente todo el tiempo? Tal vez es un llavero, pero no puedo detectar ninguna llave ni anillo para colgar llaves. Entonces concluyo que es una pistola de verdad, preguntándome por qué tendría una mini-pistola en su escritorio. Probablemente es demasiado pequeño para intimidar a la mayoría de las personas, pero para mí, viniendo de un país donde la gente no tiene la costumbre de mostrar su arma, o tener un arma, me siento un poco abrumada.

Mientras estoy ejecutando la entrevista, a veces el coronel toca la mini-pistola, y las imágenes de él, casualmente disparando el arma en mi dirección, se deslizan en mi mente. Lo sé, tengo demasiada fantasía, pero estoy sentada justo en frente de ella.

Me pregunto si sería muy incauto preguntarle al respecto, pero decido no hacerlo. Si fuera real, entonces REALMENTE me distraería. Y si resulta ser solo un artilugio, entonces tal vez lo avergonzaría con la pregunta (¿cómo pensar tal cosa de tener un arma real aquí)?

En el momento de finalizar la entrevista, ya no creo que es una pistola real. Pero incluso si se tratara de un artilugio pequeño, poniéndolo frente a otra persona, no está realmente correcto, creo.
